GBL Week 9 Recap and Power Rankings

After nine weeks, only one out of the six teams have been eliminated from playoff contention. Home-field advantage throughout the playoffs has not been decided either. The Gashouse Gorillas and Nighttime Ninjas will square off next week to decided the top seed. Even the Lightning find themselves still in the mix but, they have to play the exact team four straight games. And it happens to be the team that they are chasing, the Stallionaires. If the Lightning can win every game they can sneak in to the playoffs and pretty much shock the world (Mainly Northwest Indiana). Week 9 was also record breaking, as Ethan Arvay broke the GBL's consecutive games hit streak. Also, Jackson Buzea has a chance to break the single season batting average record next week. Needless to say, it will be an interesting final week of the regular season.

WEEK 9 POWER RANKINGS

6. Bird Gang 5-13 (#5 Last Week)

After forfeiting two games in Week 1, the Bird Gang forfeited the games in Week 9 as well. They were not technically eliminated until after the losses. They just could not get anyone to the field. They have been competitive all season but, four losses via forfeit has been their downfall. Therefore, they drop a spot in the power rankings and they drop out of playoff contention.

5. Lightning 4-12 (#6 Last Week)

The Lightning were extremely close to stealing a game from their opponent this week. Andrew Felde almost saved the day but, the Taka Drivers were able to take care of business. The Lightning lost both games but, they still find themselves with a long shot at making the playoffs. All they have to do is beat the Stallionaires four straight times. Good Luck with that.

4. Stallionaires 8-8 (#4 Last Week)

As the temperature heats up, the Stallionaires offense has become more dangerous. They struggled early in the year with scoring but, that seems to be a thing of the past. They still rank 5th in runs scored and batting average. That all may change as their opponent next week has the worst ERA in Griffleball and they will be ready to go come playoff time.

3. Gashouse Gorillas 11-7 (#3 Last Week)

The Gashouse Gorillas celebrated another routine playoff appearance by not even taking the field. They were awarded two wins via forfeit. The Gorillas are also catching fire at the right time. They are 6-1 since losing four games in a row and they still have a chance at the number one overall seed in the playoffs. They must beat the Nighttime Ninjas twice and they have to outscore them by 15 or more runs to sit atop the GBL once again.

2. Taka Drivers 11-7 (#2 Last Week)

Before the season, nobody was sure what to expect from the Taka Drivers. Now the GBL knows. The Taka Drivers do not make mistakes, they can hit, and everyone can pitch. Even with a desperate Lightning squad, the Taka Drivers showed them what it takes to make it to the GBL Playoffs. They have secure their first ever playoff appearance in their inaugural season. But knowing this team, they are not done yet.

1. Nighttime Ninjas 13-5 (#1 Last Week)

Even though they received a beating in one of their two games this week, the Ninjas were able to bounce back. They are one win away from clinching home field advantage throughout the playoffs but, their is a familiar foe standing in their way. The Gashouse Gorillas. Even if the Ninjas lose both games, they still may end of the number one seed due to runs scored against their opponents.

WEEK 9 RECAP

Bird Gang v. Gashouse Gorillas Game 1 and 2

Gashouse Gorillas win both games versus the Bird Gang via forfeit. The forfeits eliminate the Bird Gang from making the playoffs. The wins also give the Gashouse Gorillas a chance to become the number one seed.

Nighttime Ninjas v. Stallionaires Game 1

THE JANKE CAGE - It looked like your typical Stallionaire game for the first inning, then the Stallionaires' bats caught fire. After Sammy Krucek started the scoring with a solo home run in the first, the Stallionaires loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning. Mike Kubacki Jr. found himself in some trouble but, was able to escape. He did not escape the bottom of the second. The Ninjas had a 1-0 lead heading into the second and they would not regain the lead for the duration of the game. Matt Kuna started the second with a solo shot to tie the game at 1. Then the merry-go-round started. Tied at 1, the Stallioanires loaded the bases. Then, Nate Bryan tripled off the fence to clear the bases to make it 4-1. Kuna singled after that to make it 5-1. He added another RBI single to make it 6-1 and Nate tripled to increase their lead to 8-1. Kubacki ended the bleeding by getting Kuna to ground out but, the damage was done. In the top of the third, Ethan Arvay doubled in one to cut the lead to 8-2 but, they did not have a chance to score again. In the bottom of the third, the Stallionaires picked up right where they left off. With men on first and second, Kuna doubled to score one and doubled in his next at-bat to score two more. With the score being 11-2, the Stallionaires could end the game with one more run. With Nate Bryan batting and the runner on third, Nate sent one back to the mound. Kubacki was unable to field the ball cleanly leading to the winning run to score.

FINAL - Stallionaires 12 Nighttime Ninjas 2

Nighttime Ninjas v. Stallionaires Game 2

THE JANKE CAGE - After scoring 12 runs in the first game, the Stallionaires may have wished they would have saved some for the next one. Without Ethan Arvay on the mound, the task would be up to Mike Kubacki Jr. and Sammy Krucek to stifle the Stallionaire bats. And they did just that. After a scoreless first, the Ninjas got things started in the next inning. The Ninjas loaded the bases against opposing pitcher Nate Bryan and were able to strike. With zero outs, Kubacki single in the games first run to make it 1-0 Ninjas. With the threat still looming, Bryan was able to pitch out of the jam and keep the Ninjas at one. Arvay belted one over the fence in the top of the third to make it 2-0. With a 2-0 lead and Krucek having to come out of the game, it was up to Kubacki to shut the door. In the bottom of the fourth, the pressure began to build for the Ninjas. The Stallionaires loaded the bases and Bryan singled to cut the deficit to 2-1. But Kubacki pitched himself out of what could have been a disastrous inning. With a 2-1 lead, Kubacki had a chance to redeem himself on the mound and record his first save of the season. He did just that. Kubacki got the Stallionaires in back-to-back groundouts to end the game and inch the Ninjas one step closer to home-field advantage.

FINAL - Nighttime Ninjas 2 Stallionaires 1

Lightning v. Taka Drivers Game 1

THE JANKE CAGE - The Taka Drivers are one of the best teams in the GBL but, they had a bit of trouble with the Lightning. Earlier in the season, these two teams split and it nearly happened again on Sunday ("almost"). The Lightning have been the worst hitting team in the GBL, hitting under .300 as a team. They did not do much to help those numbers. The scoring got started in the third. The Taka Drivers has men on first and second with one out then Jackson Buzea stepped to the plate. Buzz smacked a pitch from Andrew Felde off the fence to score both runs and give the Taka Drivers a 2-0 lead. It appeared to be all the Taka Drivers needed to win the game. Especially since Mark Miecznikowski was flirting with perfection through four innings. With the perfect game on the line in the top of the fifth, Mez seemed to be locked in. With newly acquired Shawn Siokis at the plate, the Lightning were able to break through. Siokis drew a walk to end Mez's perfect game but, the no-hitter was still intact until the next batter. With a man on first and down by two, Andrew Felde had a chance to tie the game at 2. And that is what he did. Felde sent a high fly ball that carried over the center field wall to tie the game at 2. After being dominated all game, the Lightning clawed back but, this was no story book ending. With the score tied at 2, the first batted in the bottom of the fifth ended all hope. Jackson Buzea did not wait long, as hit smashed a solo home run to give the Taka Drivers a walk off victory.

FINAL - Taka Drivers 3 Lightning 2

Lightning v. Taka Drivers Game 2

THE JANKE CAGE - With the Lightning already down one game, they really needed a victory in Game 2 but, the Taka Drivers were just too much to handle. After a good start from Andrew Felde in Game 1, he could not find the strike zone in Game 2. The Taka Drivers started fast and did not let their foot off the pedal. With the bases loaded, Ryan Voges walked to score the games first run. Then, Jackson Buzea singled to make it 2-0. The next batter, Chris Bartley, doubled to make it 4-0 and immediatley after that, Mark Miecznikowski, single to increase their lead to five. That is when it seemed Felde had given up. He began to lob the wiffle ball over the plate, hoping the Taka Drivers would hit into the second out of the inning. The strategy did not work as Voges single in another run to make it 6-0. Then, Bartley walked in another, with the bases loaded, to increase their lead to seven. Already down 7-0, the Lightning would cut the deficit to five after a Derek Revis triple. The Taka Drivers increased their lead to 8-2 after walking in yet another run. With the game pretty much in hand, Felde came to bat in the top of the fourth. With Voges playing in the field, Felde and Voges had themselves a couple of words (when I mean a couple, I mean both of them were talking trash the entire at-bat). It gave the game some excitement but, the Taka Drivers were able to let their play do the talking. The Taka Drivers would end up winning the game and completed the sweep of the Lightning.

FINAL - Taka Drivers 8 Lightning 2

#NoExcuses: An Inside Look at the 2015 NWLA Tournament

When I told most of my friends (yes I have some), colleagues, and family about a National Wiffle Ball Tournament they laughed. Most could not believe that the tournament even existed. When I showed them footage of actual game play their laughter turned to admiration. They wanted to play right then and there.  I was just like them one year ago. I knew about my hometown league, the Griffeball League, but I never knew there was a tournament for teams around the nation.

When I first entered the field, I was in amazement. There were four separate fields, a HQ tent, hundreds of wiffle balls, and a fucking jumbo-tron. The atmosphere was electric. Sixteen teams qualified and every single one believed they had a chance to win it all. Most teams arrived on Friday and were welcomed with gifts from the man who runs the tournament, Chris Gallaway. He also runs his own league, Potomac Wiffle Ball, who also participated in the festivities. Last year's champions, Wiffle Ball in South Eastern Michigan, were there as well and made their presence known immediately. They brought their roster and more fans than any other team including the one and only, Carl Coffee.

On Friday night, the NWLA hosted an All-Star Game and Home Run Derby (There was supposed to be a Beer Run but the complex did not allow alcohol on the field, jerks). The GBL has two participants, Matt Kuna (Home Run Derby) and Jeremy Ratajczyk (All-Star Game). Kuna advanced to the second round of the derby and Ratajczyk hit a home run during the All-Star game. Everything about the tournament was extremely professional. Line-up cards, NWLA branded wiffle-balls, t-shirts, did I mention the FUCKING JUMBO-TRON, and they updated social media at every crucial moment. They kept us informed, entertained, and appreciated.

Now as some of you may know the GBL does not use the official wiffle ball in league play. Our league gets hammered about not using official NWLA balls. Even though the GBL has not won a title yet, the league still finishes in the middle of the pack. Last year we finished 8th and we are looking to improve on that this year. The 2015 team also did not consist of one of the GBL's greats, Kyle Lidster. Most thought that without Lidster, the GBL did not stand a chance (#NoLidsterNoChance) but, our pitching was better than most thought. The problem was hitting and as Ethan Arvay would say, "We. Need. To. Hit. Better."

At the end of the last game (Game Recaps coming later this week), the GBL fell to the Home Run League 1-0. The GBL only had one hit in our last two games, losing both, and fell victim to one of the best pitching performances at the NWLA. We finished higher than we ever had at the tournament, even without much practice using the "official" wiffle balls. The GBL Celebration Station still finished short of the actual prize but, confidence is building. It will be a matter of time before the GBL can call themselves the best and celebrate their triumph. In the mean time, it will be back to the drawing board for Jeremy Ratajczyk and company. There will be no excuses from our players this season and we will be ready come this time next year. Wiffle Out.

GBL Week 8 Recap & Power Rankings

Only two more weeks of games remain on the GBL schedule and the four playoff teams are nearly set in stone. The Nighttime Ninjas (12-4) were the first to secure their bid to the postseason. They swept the Bird Gang (5-11), whose postseason chances are now almost out of reach. The Taka Drivers (9-7) won each game by one run against their opponent, the Stallionaires (7-7), and completed their first sweep of the season. In the GBL's longest standing rivalry, the Gashouse Gorillas (9-7), took care of business winning both games versus the Lightning (4-10). The Bird Gang and Lightning are mathematically still alive but, the odds are not in their favor.

The games this week did not have as much flair as the past but, Week 8 proved to be one of the most crucial. With one team sweeping in every series, the GBL playoffs have become clearer than ever. It is just a matter of time before one team stands above them all and raises a championship banner.

WEEK 8 POWER RANKINGS

6. Lightning 4-10 (#6 Last Week)

After not being able to play in last week's games, most would not have known if they actually did play this week. In two games versus the Gashouse Gorillas, the Lightning did not manage to score a single run. Their pitching did keep the games within striking distance but, without an offense they were no match for Gashouse. They are going to have to win every game for the rest of the season if they want to be in the playoffs.

5. Bird Gang 5-11 (#5 Last Week)

It seemed like the Bird Gang were destined to find a way back into the playoff race but, awaiting them was the first place Nighttime Ninjas. They were in control for only about an inning on Sunday. Then their pitching fell apart and gave up nineteen runs in two games. Although not eliminated yet from contention, the Bird Gang need a ton of help.

4. Stallionaires 7-7 (#2 Last Week)

The Stallionaires offense struggled once again to score runs and it cost them both games this week. They have been phenomenal on the mound this season but, when they step up to the lawn chair things go a bit different. The Stallionaires scored two runs in two games but, only lost each game by one run. The GBL has seen what the Stallionaires can do on offense when they are scoring runs. They just need to be more consistent.

3. Gashouse Gorillas 9-7 (#4 Last Week)

After falling below .500 for a brief time, the Gashouse Gorillas have been nearly unstoppable since. They have won the past four out of five games and now sit tied for second. Even without the dominant Jim Tucker this week, Ryan Galiher and Jeremy Ratajczyk filled his shoes on the mound. They combined to allow zero runs, and demoralized their opponent by the end of the second game, One win next week may clinch another playoff berth for the defending three time champions.

2. Taka Drivers 9-7 (#3 Last Week)

In Week 8, the Taka Drivers accomplished a feat they have not been able to achieve all season. They were able to sweep the Stallionaires with a dose of their own medicine. The Taka Drivers received great pitching from Mark Miecznikowski and Chris Bartley. With Ryan Voges shut down until the playoffs, the Taka Drivers showed the GBL that they are possibly the most complete team. They will be a tough out come playoff time

1. Nighttime Ninjas 12-4 (#1 Last Week)

The Nighttime Ninjas are the first team in 2015 to secure a playoff bid. They showed the Bird Gang that no lead is safe. After going down early in the first game, the Ninjas answered back in the same inning to reclaim the lead. Kubacki, Arvay, and Krucek powered their way to two wins. They scored nineteen runs and hit ten home runs on their way to victory. With two more wins, the Nighttime Ninjas, can clinch first place.

WEEK 8 RECAP

Taka Drivers v. Stallionaires Game 1

THE JANKE CAGE - A possible playoff match-up between the Taka Drivers and Stallionaires did not disappoint. After a double in the first by Jackson Buzea, Chris Bartley followed by driving him in with a double of his own. The Taka Drivers took an early 1-0 off Stallionaires starter Matt Kuna. It would be the only run Kuna would allow in three innings. The Taka Drivers starter, Mark Miecznikowski, pitched just as well. He only allowed one run to score in his three innings of work. The Stallionaires finally broke through in the third. With the bases loaded, David Konopasek singled and drove in the Stallionaires first run of the game. Entering the fourth inning, the score was tied 1-1 and, each team sent in their relief. After Konopasek threw a scoreless fourth, his teammate started the bottom half of the inning off with a bang. Matt Kuna launched a pitch from Buzea and gave the Stallionaires a 2-1 lead heading into the last inning. The top of the fifth started well for the Taka Drivers and, they capitalized on some mistakes in the field. With men on second and third, Chris Bartley singled in the tying run. The next batter could have been the last out for the Stallionaires heading into the fifth tied at 2 but, a costly error scored another run for the Taka Drivers. The Taka Drivers took a 3-2 lead heading into the last half of the fifth. Buzea shut down any chance of a comeback by striking out the side and the Taka Drivers were able to hang on to win the first game.

FINAL - TAKA DRIVERS 3 STALLIONAIRES 2

Taka Drivers v. Stallionaires Game 2

THE JANKE CAGE - Pitching dominated Game 1 between the Taka Drivers and the Stallionaires and the same can be said for Game 2. Neither team was able to put any runners in scoring position until the third inning. Chirs Bartley was masterful on the mound only allowing one hit in three plus innings of work. His counterpart, David Konopasek, went out for out with Bartley and, only allowed two hits. With both pitchers working quickly, the game seemed over before it even started. The only run that scored came in the top of third. Chris Bartley helped his own cause and, smashed a solo home run to lead off the third. The Taka Drivers took a 1-0 lead and never looked back. The Stallionaires were able to get their first hit of the game in the fourth via a double by David Konopasek but, were not able to drive him in to tie the game. Jackson Buzea pitched one and half innings to pick up the save and, the Taka Drivers completed their first sweep of the season.

FINAL - TAKA DRIVERS 1 STALLIONAIRES 0

Gashouse Gorillas v. Lightning Game 1

THE JANKE CAGE - After nearing falling out of the league, the Lightning, needed to come back strong. They did the exact opposite. The Gashouse Gorillas took the lead in the top of the first via a Jeremy Ratajczyk home run and, they never looked back. The Lightning were only able to muster one hit the entire game. They were unable to figure out starter, Ryan Galiher, and reliever, Jeremy Ratajczyk. While the Lightning struggled, the Gashouse Gorillas dominated every aspect of the game. Even though one run was enough to beat the Lightning, Gashouse did not let the foot off the gas pedal. In the top of the fourth, Galiher smashed a two run homer to give the Gorillas a 3-0 lead. Then in the fifth, Gashouse scored two more to end any chance the Lightning had of a comeback. Ratajczyk came in relief for Galiher and in recent weeks, Rat has gotten himself into a couple of jams, This week he struck out three, did not allow a hit, and held the Lightning scoreless to end the game.

FINAL - GASHOUSE GORILLAS 5 LIGHTNING 0

Gashouse Gorillas v. Lightning Game 2

THE JANKE CAGE - The Lightning and Gashouse Gorillas used to have a intensely competitive rivalry. The times sure have changed. The Gashouse Gorillas jumped on top of their opponent early in the first. With the bases loaded, Ryan Galiher, drew a base on balls from starter Derek Revis. The Gashouse Gorillas took an early 1-0 lead and piled on a few more in the second. Revis loaded the bases once again and, Gashouse delivered. Jeremy Ratajczyk walked and brought in one run and Ryan Galiher singled to bring in another. Heading into the fourth, the Lightning found themselves down 3-0 and without a hit. Their misery did not stop there. The Lightning allowed a run to score in the fourth via a fielding error. Revis did break through for the Lightning in the fourth by getting the teams first hit of the game. The Gashouse Gorillas scored nine runs in two games but, they only needed one in each to sweep the Lightning.

FINAL - GASHOUSE GORILLAS 4 LIGHTNING 0

Bird Gang v. Nighttime Ninjas Game 1

GRIFFLE GROUNDS - The Bird Gang have been playing well in recent weeks but, they ran into a buzz-saw in form of the Nighttime Ninjas. The Ninjas set the tone in the first inning. Sammy Krucek hit a home run off Bird Gang starter Zach Duvnjak to give his team a 1-0 lead. The Ninjas did run into a bit of trouble in the second. After the first two hitters reached base, Nick Trauscht hit one into the grass to take a 3-1 lead. The Bird Gang increased their lead to 6-1 after Duvnjak hit his first career GBL home run. The Ninjas flipped the script in the bottom of the second going back-to-back-to-back. With the bases loaded and one run already in, Mike Kubacki Jr. hit a grand slam to tie the score at six. Then, Ethan Arvay and Sammy Krucek clobbered solo home runs of their own. Krucek came in for relief in the third and held the Bird Gang scoreless. Then, he helped his cause with another solo home run in the bottom half of the inning. Down 9-6, the Bird Gang didn't go down without a fight. They loaded the bases in the fourth but, could not score. They were able to score one in the fifth via a Trauscht solo home but, came up just short.

FINAL - NIGHTTIME NINJAS 9 BIRD GANG 7

Bird Gang v. Nighttime Ninjas Game 2

GRIFFLE GROUNDS - By dropping the first game, the Bird Gang desperately needed a win. The Nighttime Ninjas were just too much to handle. The Ninjas loaded the bases in the first and Krucek drew a walk to score the games first run. Then, Ethan Arvay singled to bring in another to go up 2-0. Arvay dominated on the mound striking out six and only allowing one run. They added two more in the second. Krucek and Arvay hit two solo home runs to give the Ninjas a early four run lead. Nick Trauscht lead off the third with a solo home run and cut the lead to 3. In the fourth, the Bird Gang loaded the bases and were only able to scrape across one run on a Trauscht single. Later in the inning, the Ninjas blew the game wide open. Mike Kubacki Jr. singled in one to start the merry-go-round. Then, Arvay and Krucek went back-to-back to go up 9-2. Shortly after that, Krucek hit his third home run later in the inning. The Bird Gang had one more chance, down eight, and searching for answers. The Ninjas held them scoreless in the fifth to en-route to a commanding sweep.

GBL Celebration Station Roster Profile

Well, it's that time of year again - the highlight of the summer for the wiffleball world. The annual NWLA tournament is less than three weeks away, and sixteen wiffleball leagues from across the country are preparing for a run at the game's most coveted prize, a national title.

The Griffleball League has its roster all set. It was revealed last week via YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtIhyOM-ei8). But here is a more detailed version of Griffleball's national squad who will be known as Celebration Station this year in Ohio.

JEREMY RATAJCZYK - #47
NWLA Experience: 4th Year
Age: 25
Bats: L
Throws: R
Jeremy is the manager of Celebration Station and also the team captain. He is the GBL's all-time HR and RBI leader. He will be relied on heavily to drive in runs for Celebration Station. He will also serve as one of the team's pitchers after a solid performance on the mound at regionals in June. Jeremy owns a career .436 batting average in NWLA play which is the 2nd-highest of any player.

ETHAN ARVAY - #5
NWLA Experience: 2nd Year
Age: 25
Bats: R
Throws: R
Ethan has posted some of the leagues best stats in the 2015 GBL season. With the Nighttime Ninjas this season, Arvay has a .474 batting average, 14 home runs, and a league leading 43 RBI. He has helped the Nighttime Ninjas take control of first place at 10-4 and, is considered an early MVP favorite for 2015. Ethan owns a career 2.00 ERA at the NWLA tournament which is the best of any player in the GBL.

NATE BRYAN - #15
NWLA Experience: 3rd Year
Age: 26
Bats: R
Throws: R
Nate Bryan is one the best all-around players in the GBL. Nate can hit, pitch, and field as good as or better than anyone in the league. This season with the Stallionaires, Nate has a .304 batting average to go along with a 2.32 ERA on the mound. After winning the 2014 Gold Hands award for outstanding defense, Nate will almost certainly be relied on for his defense in the upcoming tournament. He has also the second highest career batting average, .314, of any GBL player in the tournament.

ANDREW FELDE - #34
NWLA Experience: 1st Year
Age: 19
Bats: R
Throws: R
In his first year at NWLA, Andrew posted a .286 batting average with one home run and 5 RBI. He was also the only GBL player to register a win on the mound at regionals. As manager of the Lightning, Andrew has been his teams most consistent threat in the 2015 season. With a 3.70 ERA with the Lightning, Andrew is going to be one of the GBL's starting pitchers heading into the NWLA national tournament.

RYAN GALIHER - #43
NWLA Experience: 1st Year
Age: 24
Bats: S
Throws: R
The NWLA regionals was Ryan's first appearance for the GBL at the national level. He only posted a .125 batting average at regionals but, his numbers in the GBL tell a different story. Ryan has hit 64 home runs in his GBL career and, he would love to show off some of that power at the NWLA tournament. He has also been with the GBL since its inaugural season. The GBL is going to need Ryan to drive in runs and shut down opponents on the mound.

MATT KUNA - #9
NWLA Experience: 2nd Year
Age: 26
Bats: R
Throws: R
Matt is one of the GBL's best pitchers and the whole league knows. He has a career 1.47 ERA, 71 strikeouts, and has posted 11 wins in 75 innings pitched. Pitching is considered his strongest aspect but, he his no slouch at the plate. He has a career .486 batting average, 64 home runs, and 89 RBI. The GBL may need Matt on the mound if things are tight in later innings. In eight games at the NWLA, Matt has a .200 batting average with one home run and two RBI.
